Programming in Scala by Martin Odersky (the creator of Scala), Lex Spoon and Bill Venners is the definitive guide to Scala. What is the plan for its 3rd version? Programming in Scala: A Comprehensive Step-by-Step Guide. Is the 2nd version better than other recent books? Some might think that I dont need any Java books, but I need this one. I sure wish I had this book ten years ago. Scala is an object-oriented programming language for the Java Virtual Machine. Martin's book, Programming in Scala 2nd, was published January 2011. To do this, it dubs itself a "comprehensive step-by-step guide". It certainly meets those goals, but unfortunately was overly complex in certain sections.
